Getting into the Swing of Things

Yes, it's been two days since my last comic post. School's been... interesting. This semester I'm having my first experience with true night classes (twice a week) and it is killer. I'm not used to going to class in the evening and driving home in the dark! I'll have a comic for you tomorrow, I promise. I mean.. I've got all morning to do it before I go to campus haha.

Sorry

I know, I know.... bad blogger. I haven't posted in three days.

It's been 'family vacation' week, since we decided not to go camping this year. So I've been busy with day trips and family time. I'll have a comic for you soon! School starts on Monday (groan) so you'll hear from me before then, don't worry.

MORE BOOKS

Um. I couldn't help it. I went to Borders again......
GOOD FINDS
An incredible find! The last one on the shelves. A complete book of packaging templates and guides!
There are all sorts of awesome package prototypes in here, from the very basic box to more complex boxes to round things to small shelves and trays... things with handles and things with windows... it goes on and on.
Possibly the greatest part of this while book: the cd of templates in the back!!
I'm in love.

This was also a surprising find!! James Jean's XOXO pack of postcards!
It's 30 of his most famous (older) paintings on some spectacularly creamy paper.
I peed a little when I found it in the bargain section for $6.
Anyone want a postcard in the mail? :)
This one Lydia found and bought: "Oceana: Our Endangered Oceans and what We Can Do to Save Them" by Ted Danson. Lydia is a huge conservation advocate, and this book is all about overfishing, pollution, and the effects on the ocean. Besides being an informative read, it is also STUNNING. The design is absolutely gorgeous.
The infographics are the best part. They are beautiful and easy to understand. Reminiscent of National Geographic!
So, my fellow designers: read this book!! Not only will you educate yourself about keeping our oceans healthy, but you'll also learn a lot about choosing an effective color palette, and making killer pull-quotes.

Books!

No comic today; I'm going to Luray Caverns with the family. Instead I'm going to brag about the books I acquired yesterday! I LOVE BOOKS.

This one was a gift from my bestest friend Morgan!!!!
Basically it's 1000 reference pictures of cute butts and red lips. My mom literally called it pornographic. I think it's adorable.
I love it Morgan!!!!
The rest of the books I got while shopping at Borders. They're going out of business, so EVERYTHING is 40-60% off. Kid you not. So Travis bought me this book on Disney animation :3
It's got all sorts of awesome process shots and info about how a movie goes from idea to final product.
This was like $2. How could I say no. Also, the cat illustration is basically the most amazing thing I've ever seen.
THIS WAS ALSO LIKE $2!!!! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?! This book is insanely awesome I am still dumbfounded that they had placed it in the EXTREME BARGAIN section!

This one I bought for practicality's sake. It was the most expensive of the lot, ringing up at $23 (down from $40!!). But it's so useful!! It's all about what to charge, how to write contracts, what other people are paying, going rates for illustrations/designing/etc, and how to master the business side of graphic design. I'm going to read it cover to cover.

**edit: noticed Travis in the mirror, reading Moonshine, a book that now costs more than three times what it originally did on Amazon. It was another awesome gift book

Bagels

You guys.

You guys, listen.

You know how much I like bagels, right?
(Correct answer: yes. a lot. A LOT a lot.)

Today (yes, it counts as today.) I'm going to MAKE BAGELS.

That's right, MAKE THEM IN MY OWN KITCHEN.
WITH THE INGREDIENTS WE ALREADY HAVE.
SO THAT IT FEELS LIKE I'M GETTING THEM FOR FREE.

Obviously, this means I'll draw a comic about it once it's all said and done. I'll report back later.

WISH ME LUCK.
THE FORCE WILL BE WITH ME

inb4 super sad I had no one to tell me "the force will be with you"....

Don't Be A Tourist in D.C.

It's August, which means the D.C. tourist season is will be winding down in the next few weeks. So what have we learned during our stays in the nation's capital? Here's some advice from a native!
Don't make the same mistakes twice!

Also, stop taking pictures of yourself with the Washington Monument. You are not the first to think of "holding it up" or "having it come out of your pants". You look a fool.

After the Break

I've had four consecutive days of posting, and four more days of comics all set to go. My blog is officially back to daily update mode!! This is incredibly nice to say. Being in an art funk feels like I've lost a part of myself in the pit of despair.

So thank you to those who stuck with me and kept checking even when I didn't have anything new to post! I'm gonna make August a good month for my art. And then in September I'll kick it up an extra-extra notch in celebration of 365 days of comic bloggin!

NEW COMIC TOMORRROOWWW.

AND THE DAY AFTEERRRR.

AND THE DAY AFTER THAAATTTTTTTT
