Graduation

I did it. I finished college. With my grades, motivation, and sanity (mostly) intact.

Last night was our big senior show and we had a huge turn out! I was lucky enough to have my family there for the whole thing. It felt great to finally see my book being read and enjoyed the way it was meant to be. And I am over the moon that people actually liked it! People I don't know! Crazy.

That being said, I was kind of mentally preparing myself to accept that I was now in the Real World and needed to be grown up and responsible (seriously though, is anyone?), and was actually considering shutting down this blog. I figured, hey, I need to find a job, I'll be writing a graphic novel, and I don't think I'll have any time for Rachel Draws. Plus, who gives a shit?

Turns out, some people I had never met before give a shit and I ran into a few at the show. And at least one of them said "I love your blog! Keep it up!"

I'm gonna have a moment here, so no judgment.

I will keep it up, I won't stop posting stuff here. And maybe something really great will come of this sometime down the road. Who knows.

For now I'm settling in for a couple of weeks then I'll be putting myself on a schedule for DAILY POSTS (the cake is not a lie) and maybe sneak peaks at the comic book I'm hoping to finish by September. Morgan, Travis, Ahna, Lydia, Vina, (mom, dad, if you are reading this, you too :), and all you other people who read this but never got a personal shout out, you guys made it all worthwhile. Thanks for sticking with me.

SEACREST OUT.

Yogurt

Well look at the time. It's my birthday! I'm turning Old.

Lots of big things happening, besides the anniversary of my eviction from a placenta! Today I am going to send my senior thesis book to be printed (gasp!) and this weekend I'll get to bind it. Next week is when all of my finals are due (well, except for a lone presentation on the 9th although the project is technically due on the 2nd..). The following week is the big Senior Thesis Show, which is crazy exciting. And then what? Then I'm DONE. I'll be officially a college graduate! A few days after the senior show, my best friend is coming in to town, then my grandma, then we're having a party for my sister (she is also graduating) and me.... like I said, there is a lot happening!

So here's a comic I scribbled after babysitting a group of kids who really wanted their yogurt.

Dad Tells a Story

BACK FROM THE DEAD

...........FOR ONE POST UNTIL NEXT WEEK OR SO.

This was my final project for my illustration class! I felt like I was cheating since I do comics all the time and they aren't a huge deal anymore. But the professor said anything we want, so I chose the easiest anything I wanted.

Middleburg Smithie Boys

Yesterday my sisters, dad, and I went on an expedition to Middleburg, VA; a stupidly quaint little town plopped in the middle of idyllic horse-country. Strange that it's less than an hour's drive from Washington D.C. You look to your left, you see this. You look to your right and you see this. I wish I had friends in Middleburg so I would have more reasons to go. It's so freaking cute!

As you can imagine, all the quaint idyllic-ness was nauseating (in the best way, of course). I had to draw a comic. Or two. Don't get used to this sort of a drawing-dump; school's back in session tomorrow!

$10 Wedding Dress For No-One's Wedding

A few days ago, while at the thrift store, my sisters and I happened upon a handmade, vintage wedding dress. ONLY $20! Lydia and I were convinced, but we decided to leave it at the store until the next day, when we could get it for %10 percent off. But hark! What's that being projected over the loud-speaker?? "EVERYTHING %50 TODAY WITH YOUR MEMBER CARD". And that was the end of that.

It had a tulle neck with ruffles and strange little seed-pod appliques, and the most adorable buttons all down the back. After trying it on for the first time (and realizing we are a tad too large for the dress's old buttons to handle) we decided to nix the buttons and replace them with a corset tie-up. We also trimmed off the tulle neck and ruffles, and snipped off the seed-pods that were littered all over the skirt. So here's the end result! Lydia gets all the props for the photos! We'll probably take more later when we have more time.

Black Friday is Boring

Yesterday was black Friday. Which means it was SO BORING. Because on black friday you have two options:
I kid you not, the line at Tyson's mall for the Urban Outfitters wrapped from one side of the mall to the other. I should have taken a photo, it was ridiculous. And mind you, this was for the MIDNIGHT OPENING. AND IT WASN'T EVEN 11:30. For those of you unfamiliar with Tyson's (is your home under a rock comfy?), here is a picture to help you visualize:

The smiling sun is the store that apparently sells Nirvana (now at 50% off!!). The blue dots indicate the line. At point A it wrapped around that corner then back, and at point B, the line continued from there to the doors near the exit (which is about two stores down from what is visible in this picture). RIDONK.

So today I drew mini comics. I had more scraps of paper lying around, and I figured the most non-committal way to draw stuff is on tiny bits of paper so if I mess up I won't feel like throwing things. Here are a few. The rest will come tomorrow.
