Ahem, Inspiration For You

Apologies about the lack of updates. So here are two comics! the next few days are all ready to go as well.
I GOT THIS.

For those of you who don't know me well, I'm a Graphic Design major and was planning to feed right into the Masters of Art Teaching (MAT) program after I get my BFA next spring. I semi-recently decided to hold off on the MAT until I was sure I, a) couldn't get a job as a designer, b) really wanted to stay in school 2 or 3 more years, and c) wanted to be a teacher badly enough. So apparently my godmother caught wind of this 'change of majors' and decided to talk some sense into me. Because no one can make any money doing graphic design. Ever. Anywhere. Don't be stoopid, stoopid.

If I had a dollar for every time someone tried to talk me out of a degree in art, I would have a lot of dollars. Probably more than I will make in a year as a designer.

  1. I suppose you could have taken my route and gotten a Bachelor's in Japanese Art History.

Fat lot that did me! I'm back in school for Graphic Design myself!

Stick with it. One thing you've got going for you is a great sense of style and color. School will always be there so your plan is by no means a bad one.

We'll just have to fight for that paycheck. So long as you're not my opponent. That's all. I'd lose in a mouse's whisker twitch.

  2. Thanks for the encouraging words :)

It's funny how many people go back to school for Graphic Design.. because it's so much more marketable than, say, painting. But dammit, what I wouldn't give to go to school for comic art!!!! Talk about un-marketable! HAH

  3. I just want to tell you, that when I read your comic, I almost died because we are living almost exactly the same life with a few minor differences. I graduated last spring with my BFA in painting, TALK ABOUT USLESS. And I just applied to get my MST in art education, and my aunt is trying to tell me how I should try and do english ed instead, because that's more useful. I just tell her, what if I don't want to be useful? What if I just want to tell small children how great and important Ruebens is?

Don't be afraid of not being useful. You'll get by when your art is what matters. Trust me, I work at a bank, and it's awful, but I come home to my little studio with all my toxic paints, and it's worth it.

  4. Telling small children how great Ruebens is should be listed somewhere as one of the Great Life Achievements. Also, Sargent, Caravaggio, Vermeer.....

    But I digress.

Thank you so much for such kind sentiments! It's nice to know I'm not the only one looking to enjoy school & career, not make buckets of money. (But I mean, that would be nice too)
